“I love biochemistry, so I asked to stay longer!” Such was the experience of Anna Georgieva, undergrad from the University of California, Riverside, who was among four students to spend the summer on campus thanks to an internship supported by the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Institute for Biological, Physical and Engineering Sciences and the National Science Foundation. Alongside Ane Landajuela in the Nanobiology Institute’s Karatekin Lab, Anna’s research focused on the function and response of mutated FisB, a protein involved in membrane fission. “This was my first time on the East Coast, and I wanted to see what it’s like to work in a lab full-time. The openness of the space, with so many people interacting and willing to help…..Yale just made #1 on my list for grad school!”

Under the direction of Lynne Regan, Corey O’Hern, and Dorottya Noble at the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Institute, the Sackler/NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates program focuses on research at the intersection of biology, physics, and engineering, providing undergraduates with a glimpse of what graduate school at a large research institution is like.
