Mengxia Liu receives prestigious NSF CAREER award

Mengxia Liu, faculty member at the Yale Energy Sciences Institute (ESI), has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award for her work to advance next-generation optoelectronic materials and devices.

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award is widely regarded as the most prestigious grant the NSF offers to early-career faculty.

Liu is an assistant professor of Electrical and Computing Engineering at Yale. She joined the ESI at the University’s West Campus in 2022. 

Liu’s research focuses on developing high-throughput methods to create thin-film semiconductors and transform them into electronic devices.

“Light carries far more information than brightness alone,” said Liu.

“Support from the NSF will help my lab develop compact devices to decode complex optical signals and advance applications for secure optical communication, biological sensing, and imaging technologies.”

The CAREER Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.

Prior to her arrival at Yale, Liu was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and a B.Sc. from Tianjin University. In recognition of her foundational work in materials science, Liu was awarded a prestigious Packard Fellowship in 2023.

The NSF CAREER award serves as a strong indicator of a researcher’s potential to become a leader in their field.
